Spain’s Azahara Munoz defeated Taiwan’s Candie Kung 2 and 1 in Sunday’s final to capture the $1.5 million LPGA Sybase Match-Play Championship and claim her first LPGA title.

With the match squared through 10 holes, Munoz birdied to win the par-5 11th and went 2-up when Kung dropped the par-3 12th with a bogey.

The Spaniard surrendered the par-4 14th with a bogey but won the par-3 16th with a bogey as Kung double bogeyed and when both parred the 17th, Munoz claimed her first tour crown.

Kung, who eliminated World No. 1 Yani Tseng in the third round, was denied her first LPGA victory since 2008.

In earlier semi-finals, 49th-ranked Kung defeated 37th-ranked US veteran Vicky Hurst 2 and 1 while 19th-rated Munoz ousted 15th-ranked American Morgan Pressel by the same margin to set up the final at Hamilton Farm Golf Club.

Munoz won the final three holes to eliminate Pressel, who has not won an LPGA event since 2008 and was undone by a slow-play penalty on the 12th hole.

Pressel won the par-5 second and fifth holes with birdies while Munoz won the par-3 third with a birdie. Pressel won the par-4 ninth with a birdie and appeared to have taken the 12th for a 3-up edge.

But Pressel, who was warned about slow play as she started the back nine, took 39 seconds more than the maximum 90 seconds to make her putt at the 12th and as a result forfeited the hole, her lead plunging to 1-up.

Munoz birdied the 15th to square the match, but only after Pressel asked for a penalty on her for touching the line of Pressel’s putt. A video review by two officials led to a denial of the protest and Munoz then sank the 12-footer.

Pressel dropped the par-3 16th and par-4 17th with bogeys to send Munoz into the final.

Pressel beat Hurst 2 and 1 in a match for third place.

Kung birdied to win the par-4 sixth and never surrendered the lead against Hurst. Kung and Hurst exchanged pars to win holes at nine and 10, but Kung then won the par-5 11th when Hurst made bogey and took the par-3 12th with a birdie.

Hurst birdied the par-4 13th to win the hole, but Kung took the par-4 14th when Hurst bogeyed. Hurst answered with back-to-back birdies to win the par-4 15th and par-3 16th only to have Kung win the 17th with a birdie to advance.

Check out RoundBall Golf Tours for your 2012 Spain Golf Vacation Package

Defending Champion, Ian Poulter, has confirmed he will defend his title at the 2012 Volvo World Match Play Championship at Finca Cortesín, Spain, from May 17-20, 2012. The 2012 Championship will once again attract the world’s best golfers with the final 24 man field to be announced in the weeks after the conclusion of the US Masters.

Last year Poulter confirmed his reputation as one of golf’s most gutsy competitors as he capped a succession of comeback wins at the 2011 Volvo World Match Play Championship with victory, over current world number one, Luke Donald in the final at Finca Cortesín.

The final field of the 47th edition of this historic tournament looks set to match the unprecedented strength of the 2011 Championship. Repeating last year’s successfully amended format, on arrival at Finca Cortesín the players will be divided into eight groups of three players to be play in a round-robin group format on Thursday and Friday to decide which 16 players progress to Saturday’s knock-out stage with the semi-finals and final played on Sunday.

Defending Champion, Ian Poulter, is eager to play in what will be the first event back on European soil after the Masters and the most highly-prized golf event in Spain in 2012. He explained, “I can’t wait to return to Spain to defend my title at the Volvo World Match Play Championship. I love the cut and thrust of match play and find it a refreshing change from the usual stroke play format we play week in and week out on the Tour. I am also very excited be heading back to stay at the luxurious Finca Cortesín Hotel once again and all the wonderful hospitality and services they have on offer as it is definitely one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed in.”

Poulter continued, “With the fact that it’s a Ryder Cup year, I think it will be even more exciting this year with every match from the group stages to the final a chance for aspiring team members to impress Captain Olazábal in what is our final chance to play match play before Medinah.”

Per Ericsson, President of Volvo Event Management, added, “It is wonderful to hear our reigning Champion will be returning to Finca Cortesín to defend his title and to hear his enthusiasm for the Championship. We are coming up to a very exciting time on the golf calendar and it will be fascinating to see what the US Masters and of course the winner of the Volvo China Open will bring in terms of the final field. We are very happy that our changes to the qualification and format of this historic event have enhanced the tournament in many ways and that so many top players are anxious to earn their place in this elite field.”

Guy Kinnings, Global Co-Managing Director of IMG Golf, concluded, “Last year we made some significant changes to the date, format and qualification criteria and we feel they did much to improve this great event, started by IMG’s Founder Mark McCormack in 1964. Many observers thought the 2011 tournament was one of the most exciting in its long history. The player’s feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and once again we look set to assemble another world class field for this year’s Championship. Working with our partners Volvo, Finca and the European Tour we look forward to another exciting edition of the Volvo World Match Play Championship.”

Vicente Rubio, Managing Director Finca Cortesín said, “We are really looking forward to the return of the Volvo World Match Play Championship and to once again hosting a world class field of players, including our 2011 Champion at Finca Cortesín in May. The players have always been very generous in their kind comments about Finca Cortesín and we aim to make it an even better experience for them this year. All our preparations are going well and the course is in fantastic shape and we are sure that everyone will enjoy the week as much as they did last year and in 2009.”

2012 Volvo World Match Play Qualification Update
The field will comprise 24 qualifiers determined by the following criteria.

As Reported on BBC Sport

Frenchman Julien Quesne equalled the course record with a superb 64 to win the Andalucia Open by two strokes and secure his maiden European Tour title.

The 31-year-old, who began the final day three shots off the lead, birdied the tough 18th in a run of four birdies in five holes to finish 17 under par.

Italian teenager Matteo Manassero’s second successive 68 clinched second.

Local favourite and event promoter Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 71 to tie for seventh, six shots adrift.

Manassero birdied three holes in succession from the sixth but needed to collect birdies at the last two holes to match Quesne.

However, he bunkered his tee shot at the par-three 17th and then his approach to the 18th, doing well to escape with pars at both.

That left overnight leader Eduardo de la Riva needing to hole his second shot from the fairway at the 18th to tie, but he could not do so and missed out on second also after taking three putts.

Quesne, ranked 322 in the world, sent his approach to within six feet to set up his closing birdie, and was drenched in champagne by his fellow French players after being presented with the trophy.

He said: “I think it’s the best day of my life. I know I will have some good weeks this year but I’m very happy to win this early. I’ll remember this day all of my life.”

Andalucia Masters 2011 - Valderrama Golf Club

Andalucia Masters 2011 - Valderrama Golf Club

The Field

The course was designed by Sr. Robert Trent Jones in 1974 and was originally known as  Sotogrande New (Las Aves). In 1984, Jaime Ortiz-Patiño bought the field and set himself the goal of raising it to an extraordinary standard, never seen before in Europe. Sr. Robert Trent Jones came back again to re-design and improve the original layout.

The course was renamed Valderrama, the same name as the ancient estate on which the land is situated. These two men shared a common aim: to create a course that would present a test of golf to the everyday golfer and the first-class player alike. Valderrama has since risen in the Golf World rankings to become the No.1 golf course in mainland Europe, a position proudly held since 1989.

Jones built nine courses on the Costa Del Sol, and many of the region’s top clubs are within a short drive, like San Roque Club and Sotogrande Golf Club – but Valderrama is unmistakable from the rest.

No. 1 is a prime example of what to expect. It’s a subtle dogleg off the tee, but if you find the right side of the fairway, the green is blocked out by cork trees. Similarly on No. 2, if you’re on the right side, you’ll have to take a short-iron over trees onto another tiny green. The course gets narrowest and most uncomfortable on the short, par-4 eighth hole, “El Bunker,” but stay patient, eventually there are a handful of spots where you can finally open up the shoulders.

The second nine gets decidedly more undulated than the front side (which is probably a reason why the nines were flipped years ago), with numerous vantage points high enough up to see the Mediterranean in the distance. Two par-4 greens are steeply elevated – No. 10 and No. 14 – while No. 11 requires a blind shot to an elevated green from where most drives land in a sloping valley.

The par-5 17th got plenty of ink after Tiger Woods’ incident in the 2000 World Golf Championships, when his ball went from pin high to rolling back in the water. Ortiz-Patino has stated he doesn’t exactly understand what all the fuss is about regarding No. 17:

“Most members consider the 17th to be one of the more enjoyable holes on the golf course,” he’s written. “And yet I am told by some commentators that it is ‘controversial’ or even ‘notorious.’”

And for visitors, the sight of the spacious 17th fairway will fill your eyes with tears of joy after so many tighter holes previously. If there is a par 5 to be reckoned with at Valderrama, it’s the signature No. 4 “La Cascada.” This is Jones’ favorite hole on the golf course, but it required tons of renovations to make it so, including the moving of dirt to flatten it a bit and sub-air under the green, as this small surface is protected by constant shade.

Thursday 28th October saw the first day of the Andalusian Masters tournament at Valderrama, marking the start of the last European Tour event in Spain for the golf season.

The three million euro event continues until Sunday 31st October 2010, before the Dubai World Championships end the season in November.

This is the first Andalusian Masters, which joins the Andalucia open as one of Spains grandest golf tournaments, having been announced by the President of Valderrama Golf Club last December. “This event could, over the years, establish itself as one of the “not  to miss” tournaments on the European Tour Calendar”, he said.

The Valderrama Club, which played host to the Volvo Masters for 21 years, is the choice venue for the new event, in which 96 players battle for the first ever Andalusian Masters trophy, watched by a crowd of thousands.

Valderrama Golf Course

Valderrama Golf Course is a 6356 metres par 71 with no hole less than championship quality.

Other Top Golf Courses to Play in Spain

If you have already played Valderrama Golf and are familiar with the Course you may read more about other Top Golf Courses in Spain to Play here. Spain Golf Courses include Sotogrande, La Reserva, Finca Cortesin, Marbella, Flamingos and many more.

Valderrama Golf – 1st Hole ‘Sol y Sombra’ Par 4

The player hits slightly uphill to a fairly wide landing area guarded by trees. Accuracy and length are needed.

Valderrama Golf  – 2nd Hole ‘El Arbol’ Par 4

In the landing area a large Cork Oak dominates the middle of the fairway, but it can be a help, not a hindrance.

Valderrama Golf – 3rd Hole ‘El Tunel’ Par 3

For a short hole, the green is spacious enough, but it settles into the hillside, with fall-away slopes on the left and back, protected by bunkers. A shot missed to the left will leave the player with a very difficult par.

Valderrama Golf El TunelThere is also trouble behind the green – a deep grassy pocket backed by an unrelenting tangle of bushes. In the Volvo Masters a player once missed the green and took ten!

Valderrama Golf – 4th Hole ‘La Cascada’

From the Professional tee, to reach the green in two, even with the Levante, will demand a long drive, followed by an accurate 3 wood or long iron to a well-guarded two-tier green with plenty of water behind as well as on the right.

Valderrama Golf La Cascada

Valderrama Golf – 5th Hole ‘Los Altos’ Par ‘4′

A slight dogleg to the left, this is one of the shorter par 4’s, but it is also one of the most distinctive drive-and-pitch holes a golfer could wish for.

From the landing area on the left side of the fairway only a short iron is needed but the green is protected by a ‘bunker in the sky’ – a Cork Oak tree on the right front side of the green.

Valderrama Golf – 6th Hole ‘El Valejo’ Par 3

The view from the tee is dramatic: the player is 8 metres higher than the green, with a complete view of the six bunkers that encroach right up to the green surface itself. Though large, this green is difficult to putt, with an upper tier at the back that falls towards the front and right. The target area therefore is small. The green has the potential for some diabolical pin placements for championship play.

Valderrama Golf El Vallejo

Valderrama Golf – 7th Hole ‘El Mirador’ Par 5

This hole started life as a par 5, but is now a par 4 for the Professionals, while remaining a par 5 from the Amateur and Ladies tees. The fairway is beautifully defined by Cork trees on the left and Olives on the right.

Valderrama Golf – 8th Hole ‘El Bunker’ Par 4

This hole, the shortest of all the par 4’s, is a slight dogleg to the left. The fairway is framed by Cork trees, so an iron from the tee is recommended. The green is slightly elevated and protected in front by a large semi-circular bunker whose contours are well emphasised, with the back left side nearly two feet higher.

Valderramagolfelbunker

Valderrama Golf – 9th Hole ‘El Muro’ Par 4

This is one of the more difficult of the par 4’s, partly because it is long but also because the green is elevated, with bunkers on both sides that make for a narrow entrance. The green also slopes slightly from front to back and from left to right. Thus the second shot asks the player a very searching question.
