Ballesteros vows to make a farewell appearance for British fans at the 2010 Open at St Andrews

At 52 years he required a number of operations on a malignant brain tumor and to reduce the swelling in his skull. Seve won the second of his three Opens at St Andrews in 1984.

“If things go normally, I promise I will be there to say goodbye and thank you for all you have done throughout the years,” he told BBC Sport.

“Probably some people will feel sorry for me but I feel I’m a very lucky person because throughout my life I have so many great moments that I feel I have lived two or three lives.”

Though he insisted he would be back for the 2010 tournament, Ballesteros admitted that his condition has left its mark, with sight in his left eye having deteriorated.

“With putting I have to make a mark on the ball and then I use the line with the putter behind to line up,” he said.

“I don’t have the perception of distance for the long putts.”

Ballesteros Victories

Ballesteros won the Masters in 1980 and 1983  that resulted in him notching up more than 90 tournament wins.
